Radio (walkie talkie) are handheld devices which are useful to keep everyone informed, safe, and connected during a burn. The PBA team has several radio’s but it can be useful to have your own equipment for extra helpers and familiarity using your own equipment.

Here are the frequencies we're programming into the PBA radios. The Green Dot and Blue Dot frequencies will be the main channels we'll be using. The other Multi-Use Radio Service (MURS) channels will be backups in the event we get adjacent user interference.

Channel Name Label Frequency Bandwidth

Blue Dot 154.570 25 Khz (wide FM)

Green Dot 154.600 25 Khz (wide FM)

MURS 1 151.820 12.5 Khz (narrow FM)

MURS 2 151.880 12.5 Khz (narrow FM)

MURS 3 151.940 12.5 Khz (narrow FM)

We're also programming into our radios all three fire service mutual aid channels. The frequencies used by the Forest Service Red, White, and Blue channels.

Red 154.265.

White 154.280

Blue 154.295

All channels are simplex (transmit and receive on same frequency, no offset) with carrier (no tone, CTC and DCS off) squelch. Please set the squelch just at the noise threshold, which is 1 on the Baofeng radio and the power to high on all channels.

PBA member Bob Jenkins has set up our radios and will assist you if you have question. In fact, we suggest you coordinate with Bob before purchasing or programming your radios.
