The North Florida Prescribed Burn Association will be offering a prescribed burn course modeled on the Florida Forest Service's Certified Prescribed Fire Burn Manager Training course. As our coordinator, Barry Coulliette will be leading the class. Given that Barry has taught the FFS course for decades and was one of the creators of it ....you WILL learn something useful.

This will be a good opportunity to either refresh knowledge from when you took the FFS class and therefore be more proficient or, if you plan on taking the FFS class in the future, this will give you a serious head start on that. And it is an opportunity for the rest of those who do not intend to get certified to get more knowledgeable and be confident in their ability to safely burn when assisting.

There is no fee for this course and lunch will be provided.

Wear comfortable clothing for the class and suitable clothes for the Rx burn exercise. A live fire exercise is planned, weather permitting. Barry will go over proper PPE for the live fire exercise.

The course will follow the FFS course outline and cover aspects of prescribed fire ranging from "Why We Burn", to safety, smoke management, wildlife benefits and actually managing the burn. The section on "Managing the Burn" will give participants some of the tools necessary to properly conduct a burn when there is a group of other burners assisting. We'll also cover things like proper maps, necessary information, all participants helping on a burn need to know about the burn and how to craft proper descriptions of the unit being burned. Other topics will be communication, PPE standards, crew briefing before the burn and After-Action Reviews, a Burn Manager’s responsibilities during the burn and much more. Completion of this class will not qualify for certification but will give you quite the leg up when taking the class.

 Space is limited.
